When author and columnist Dan Savage learned of a fifteen-year-old boy who committed suicide after being bullied by classmates who believed he was gay, he and his husband, Terry Miller, determined to reach out to troubled LGBT youth across the country. On September 22, 2010, they uploaded a video to YouTube, where they spoke openly about the bullying they received as teenagers and how they both went on to lead rewarding adult lives filled with joy, family and love.
Since then, more than 3,000 videos have been posted with over 15 million views in the first month alone. The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, CNN, The Huffington Post and NPR have all given the Project coverage. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have posted videos; as have celebrities like Tim Gunn, Michael Kors, Ellen DeGeneres, and Neil Patrick Harris, among many others. Videos can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/user/itgetsbetterproject.
